Infants born with single ventricle physiology can now be treated surgically. This usually requires multiple operations with the final surgical procedure being a Fontan operation. During this process, infants often remain cyanotic and in precarious health, where minor health issues, such as viral infections, can become life threatening. Care of these patients requires a team, and often the point of contact when these infants get sick is the Emergency Department (ED). In this issue of The Journal, Cashen et al evaluated ED utilization, outcome, and preparedness of ED physicians to care for these patients.
